Electricity Authority Completes 76% of Maintenance Ahead of Peak Summer Demand

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has achieved substantial progress in its annual maintenance program for electricity generation units and water production facilities, as part of its preparations for the high-demand summer season.

According to informed sources within the ministry, 76 percent of the maintenance work on electricity generation units has been completed. The remaining work is expected to be finalized by the end of May, with the exception of two units scheduled to be brought online at a later stage.Stay updated on Kuwait’s latest news and job openings by following our WhatsApp channel!https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaCkXo25q08jnKrRwo27

Once all units are operational, the ministry’s total production capacity is expected to exceed 18,000 megawatts, supplemented by an additional 1,000 megawatts secured through the Gulf interconnection network. This combined capacity is anticipated to significantly reduce the risk of major power outages during peak summer months.

The sources emphasized that the available electricity, including the purchased supply, will be sufficient to meet demand—provided no emergency shutdowns occur—particularly during high-consumption periods.

On the water production front, the ministry has completed 75 percent of the scheduled maintenance on water distillation units, with the remaining work also projected to conclude by the end of May. Officials noted that the full return of these units to service will help restore the strategic water reserve, which had temporarily declined due to the maintenance-related shutdowns.

As for current load levels, the power consumption index reached 13,600 megawatts yesterday. Despite the recent rise in consumption, the index remains within the safe range, thanks to the reactivation of several units over the past week and the purchase of 600 megawatts from the Gulf network.
