New Kuwait–India Air Deal Strengthens Travel, Trade, and Strategic Ties
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has announced that the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the State of Kuwait and the Republic of India marks a significant milestone in strengthening Kuwait’s strategic position as a key international transit hub. This agreement, aimed at increasing flight capacity between the two nations, is expected to enhance Kuwait’s air connectivity with Asia and broader global markets.
In a statement, the DGCA emphasized that the MoU will pave the way for expanding the number of direct flights between Kuwait International Airport and major Indian airports. The DGCA noted that this strategic move aligns with the vision of His Highness the Amir of the State of Kuwait (may God protect him) and follows the recent visit of His Excellency the Prime Minister of India to Kuwait. The initiative has been closely followed and supported by the Council of Ministers, reflecting Kuwait’s commitment to advancing its civil aviation sector, enhancing the efficiency of its international airport, and securing both economic and strategic gains, particularly in light of ongoing expansion and infrastructure development projects at the airport.
A key factor behind this agreement is the growing Indian expatriate population in Kuwait, which has surged from approximately 300,000 in 2007 to nearly one million today. The increased demand for travel between the two countries, for both residents and Kuwaiti citizens, necessitated the scaling up of regular flight operations.
The DGCA also expressed its appreciation for the unwavering support of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, whose directives have consistently promoted international cooperation and civil aviation development, while opening up new opportunities for economic partnerships that strengthen the national economy.
According to the statement, the Indian government showed a strong interest in finalizing this agreement, recognizing its value in facilitating travel for its citizens and reinforcing the longstanding social, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations. The MoU is a clear reflection of the strong bilateral relationship and opens new avenues for collaboration, especially in the field of air transport.
The DGCA highlighted that this achievement was the result of nearly 18 years of persistent effort, culminating in a successful round of bilateral talks held on July 15, 2025, in New Delhi. The discussions were led by the President of Civil Aviation, Sheikh Eng. Hamoud Mubarak Al-Hamoud Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who coordinated with various Kuwaiti government agencies to reach this historic agreement. The MoU includes key provisions that serve the evolving needs of the air transport market in both countries.
This agreement not only strengthens Kuwait’s role in international aviation but also underscores the commitment of both nations to deepening cooperation and overcoming longstanding challenges through diplomacy, strategic planning, and mutual respect.
