Samsung Returns to Exynos for Galaxy Z Flip 7 Amid Cost Concerns

Samsung is reportedly reverting to its initial strategy for the upcoming Galaxy Z series, with fresh reports indicating that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will be powered by the in-house Exynos 2500 processor. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to retain Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset.

Earlier this year, speculation was rife over Samsung’s processor choice for its foldable lineup. The company initially planned to introduce the Exynos 2500 in the Z Flip 7—marking a major shift from its usual reliance on Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon chips. However, subsequent reports suggested a reversal due to performance concerns with the Exynos processor.

Now, according to a report from 9to5Google citing the Chinese outlet Chosun Daily, Samsung is once again moving forward with the Exynos 2500 for the Flip 7. The report notes that although the processor’s performance still falls short of expectations, the switch is largely driven by financial factors.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor pricing has reportedly surged by over 20%, prompting Samsung to favor its more cost-effective Exynos alternative—even if it doesn’t fully meet the company’s quality benchmarks. Current manufacturing yields for the Exynos 2500 range between 20% and 40%, well below Samsung’s typical production target of 60%.

Ultimately, the decision seems to be a cost-saving measure. The Galaxy Z Flip 7’s pricing structure likely couldn’t accommodate the increased expense of a Snapdragon chip, pushing Samsung to stick with its own processor. Meanwhile, the more premium Galaxy Z Fold 7 will continue to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset.
